Planning a business website in Ethiopia
Plan a useful business website with clear customer journeys, approved content, mobile testing, enquiry delivery and ownership of domains and analytics.
A business website should make it easy for a visitor to understand your organisation and take the next useful step. Start a website project by agreeing who the site serves and what those people need to accomplish. A product supplier, a professional-services firm and a public-service organisation will not need the same navigation or enquiry journey.
Choose the main visitor journeys
Write down a small number of tasks: understand a service, compare products, view completed work, find contact details or send an enquiry. For each task, identify the information a visitor needs and the page that should answer it. A sitemap is strongest when each page has a distinct purpose, rather than repeating the same sales text with different keywords.
Prepare content before visual design
- Confirm the official business name, contact details and opening hours.
- Provide approved service descriptions and product information.
- Use photographs, project examples and customer statements that you have permission to publish.
- Decide which content needs English, Amharic or another language, and who reviews each version.
- Assign a person to keep information current after launch.
Use evidence for claims. If you publish a result, keep the source and the customer's approval. Do not substitute stock testimonials, invented awards or unsupported percentages for real proof of work.
Test the enquiry journey end to end
Submitting a form is only the start of the test. Confirm that the message is stored, the right team receives it, errors are understandable and visitors can retry safely. Review what happens when email is delayed or an attachment is rejected. Test on the phones and network conditions your audience is likely to use, and check keyboard navigation as well as touch input.
Agree the launch and maintenance responsibilities
Record who owns the domain, hosting account, source repository and analytics properties. Include HTTPS, backups, updates, access removal and recovery in the handover. Search indexing and rankings are not the same thing: submit the sitemap, check which pages are indexed and use actual search-performance data to improve the content over time.
